That unofficial last weekend of summer is here and we have steak cookoffs, rib fests and probably several beverages in your future. Let’s not waste any more time and get to this weekends BBQ events.
Grill Your Steak Off 2019 Wrapup
Every year it seems like Williams Ace Hardware finds more ways to improve an already fun event. This year things changed up a bit and “Grill Your Ace Off” became a joint event with “Grill Your Steak Off” – the SCA sanctions steak cookoff with the winner getting a golden ticket to the SCA World Championship.
At the start of the day, there were 33 contestants taking a shot at the $1000 top prize plus a Golden Ticket and in the end, it was Robyn Garrett standing as the Queen of the Steak. In a tight race, she beat out the 2nd place finisher by 2.1 points with the taste of her steak setting her apart.
Personally, I finished 16th out of 33 which was a HUGE step up from 2018 when I was dead last. I won’t give you any spoilers but expect a full recap after the holiday. Speaking of HUGE how about that trophy? Good lawd was that awesome!
The thought of your first cookoff may seem a bit overwhelming but I have a checklist that will ease the stress of getting ready for your big day. Take a deep breath and relax because you won’t be the only rookie at the fire and the vets are always willing to help.
New BBQ coming to Pittsburgh

This past week Next Pittsburgh reported on 2 new joints opening up this fall in Pittsburgh – Paulie’s Smokehouse in Dormont and Off the Rails in Verona. We’ve talked about both places briefly over the last few months but something you may not know is that Paulie’s will be using a custom stick burner that owner Mike Chavis has been using for a while.
A stick burner in the Pittsburgh winter? This is going to be fun and (hopefully) a delicious test. Hopefully, we can get in there before they open to check out the new digs.
Heinz Field Rib Fest
Since 1990 the Heinz Field Rib Fest has been a staple on the North Shore featuring national touring rib vendors, music, and family activities. This free event runs Noon to 11 PM until Monday and features The Clarks on Friday night and Pitt vs Virginia on Saturday night.
New this year “The Pittsburgh Knights will bring FREE play to the FedEx Great Hall with Pinball machines, retro arcade games and new gaming on today’s consoles! ”

If you think you have what it takes to make money winning steak head to Coudersport for the Route 6 Steak Cookoff and then stick around all weekend for the BBQ!
